Arena Ball : The Building of Virginia's Soccer Dynasty

A Fun,Informative,and Great Photographs
This is a fun book with outstanding photos that follows now-famous young men and coach. In a sport where lady luck can kiss you or kick you in the same contest, this book chronicles the UVa program becoming a perenial power house. UVa won four national titles, three of which were unprecedented consecutive crowns. The book is written in the voice of a sports columnist, Rob Daniels. This author does not get into the technical and tactical aspects of the game;it is not the purpose of the book, (much to the disapointment of this youth soccer coach and enthusiast). Although not a coaching manual, it does give a few insights into the disposition and demeanor of coach Bruce Arena. Included is background of some of the gifted players who have played at Virginia such as Harkes,Meola, and Reyna. Of couse, several more gifted players are mentioned as the author details important moments in roster changes, player developement, and key moments in the games. The collection of top quality photographs is inspiring and helps make the book a discussion piece. However, I am still looking forward to a coaching book authored by Arena Himself.

Just The Facts
This is a great book for beginners who are looking for simple piano instruction. It is packed with songs(more than 40). Some examples: "This Old Man", "For He's A Jolly Good Fellow", "Over The Rainbow", "Minuet" and "A Tisket, A Tasket". This book introduces the terms and methods with brief definitions, then gives you short songs sheets to practice with before applying each new method in the songs. This book is available with an additional cd (which I believe this issue does comes with it)containing all of the song peices. You can play along to it to help you get the hang of the music. There are also review pages to help you understand the notes. This book is all you really need to learn piano. (I should also add that I am a high school senior & this is the book we use in my piano class).

Cavalier's Adventure : The Story of Henry Norwood

Fascinating Look at 17th Century Adventurer
Henry Norwood was a Cavalier.

He supported both Kings Charles in the English Civil War against the Cromwellians. When his side was out of favor, he sought out the still loyal crown colony of Virginia for a safe haven.

After a storm tossed voyage across the Atlantic, several of his party were stranded near present-day Fenwick Island, Delaware. Alone in winter, his starving band was saved by friendly Indians who treated his party with kindness even though both sides could not communicate with each other.

Norwood and several of his group journeyed on foot with the aid of a local Indian guide and English settler who was brought to them by an Indian messenger. He finally made his way to Jamestown and safety.

Norwood - by then only 35 - would go on to many more life adventures, including finally serving Charles II upon his restoration to the crown.

This book fascinates. Slim, it is rich in detail. The reader will receive excellent accounts of what it was like to be a voyager on those early trans-Atlantic crossings and experience the white-knuckle fright of being taken apart by a vicious storm while still out to sea. Norwoods's true adventure of survival after being abandoned by his party on the Eastern Shore islands is gripping. Most interesting also is the account of Indian life and habits while his party recuperated with the friendly band of King Kickotank and his band -- surely among the most accommodating and welcoming Indians found in the history of our settlement.

Apparently the legend of Henry Norwood is known today in the Eastern Shore area of Maryland. I had not known of him prior to getting this book, but I am glad to read his true story in a gem of a history by author Sharon Himes. I'm sure this book will interest folks on the Delmarva Peninsula, but it should not be overlooked by any wanting a fascinating story of survival and the life and travails of early settlers and adventurers.

Cavalier's Cup
Published in Paperback by Kensington Pub Corp (Mass Market) (September, 1987)
Author: Carter Dickson

The Cavalier's Cup
An entertaining change of direction for Carter Dickson's irascible sleuth, Sir Henry Merrivale. It is a typically ingenious and baffling locked-room mystery centering on the fabulously valuable goblet of the title, and why a thief should NOT have stolen it when he had the chance; but for the most part, it resembles P.G. Wodehouse or possibly the Marx Brothers, as Dickson indulges himself in the manner of country-house farce. This is good fun on all levels. Those who have never read Dickson before should know that John Dickson Carr, the man behind the psedonym, ranks with Christie and Marsh among the greats of the golden-age detective novel, and was arguably more versatile than either. His speciality was the locked-room or 'impossible' crime, and he created two memorable detectives in Merrivale and the Chestertonian Dr. Gideon Fell. The latter stars in The Hollow Man (or in the US, The Three Coffins), one of his best.

One of the Great Families of Cherokee History
This is a reprint of the correspondence of one of the Great Families of Cherokee History. The members of this family were the movers and shapers of a nation. They became victims in a little talked about civil war with in the nation. This civil conflict with in the people is important because it suggests a sell out and cover up by John Ross. I enjoy studying this era of history and this book gives a feel for the people involved like no other.

One member of the family who survived was Stand Watie. He later served in the Confederate States of America's Army as a Brigadier General. This book will be of interest to students of both civil wars.

Cinquieme Cavalier

Palpitant!!

Memoirs of a Cavalier, Or, a Military Journal of the Wars in Germany and the Wars in England from the Year 1632 to the Year 1648
Published in Paperback by Oxford University Press (June, 1991)
Authors: Daniel Defoe and James T. Boulton
Average review score:

Daniel Defoe
This is obviously one of Defoe's more obscure works. Part I begins in 1630. A young English nobleman, a second son, though his father's favorite, decides to see something of the world and begins traveling on the continent with a friend. He signs on with the troops of Gustavus Adolphus, king of Sweden, who's aiding German Protestants against, I think, the Catholics. This ten-year period occurs near the end of the Thirty Years War. My knowledge of seventeenth-century European history is practically nonexistent, so I didn't really understand the issues involved and didn't learn much more from this book.

In Part II, our nameless hero returns to England, where the Civil War between the Cavaliers (the king's troops) and the Roundheads (Puritans) is about to get underway. (It was at the end of the Civil War that Charles I was beheaded, after which the Commonwealth took over for eleven years until the restoration of Charles II in 1660.) I thought this part might be more interesting, as I do know something about English history, and it was.

Like A JOURNAL OF THE PLAGUE YEAR, this book, too, has a fictional narrator in a historical setting. If you like Defoe, you will not dislike this book. If you don't like Defoe, this book won't change your mind.

Good introductory book to the breed
For those only wanting an introduction to the breed, the book is useful. If you already know a great deal about CKCS, skip this book--it lacks depth.

A Great Little Book
I think this book is a must have for anyone interested in this breed and wanting more information. She talks about the history, the health, the care and lots of cute pictures. My mate and I both read it cover to cover and found it very informative and helpful.

Liked it, helpful
Helpful in explaining our dog to us. The housetraining part did the trick for us. We were having trouble and now no more accidents.Good advice on alot of stuff. We love our little cav.
